  1. Question 1.1 · The project manager and process · 6 marks

Duglas IT is an East African company that installs, upgrades and develops IT systems and software for businesses, treating every job as a project overseen by an appointed project manager. Duglas IT has been approached by Dalaza Food, a company specialising in food and drink additives and also active in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, computing and entertainment electronics, whose future depends on continuously developing and marketing new food products. Dalaza's profit relies heavily on maintaining market share for its new food products, especially product T, through effective online marketing, but a rival firm has begun marketing a competing product (product D) with similar functionality. To stay ahead, Dalaza has decided to commission a new and improved marketing software system. While exact requirements are still being finalised (and may still be added to or removed), Dalaza has set the following priority weightings for selecting the project: reliable marketing tools 30%, high customer reach 40%, a strong system able to stand the test of time 15%, and a system with high buy-in from all stakeholders 15%. The questions of project cost and time have not yet been settled and are expected to become clearer as the project progresses. Dalaza has asked Duglas IT for guidance from a project manager on deciding, selecting, developing and/or modifying this IT project. You are to assume the role of the project manager assigned to the Dalaza project, supported by a team you will assemble. As the project manager for Dalaza's project, you are expected not only to meet the scope, time, cost and quality requirements of the project, but also to manage the overall process so that the needs and expectations of everyone involved in the project activities are satisfied. Discuss at least three key capabilities that you should have developed, or need to develop, in order to run the assigned project successfully, explaining in your discussion why each of these capabilities is necessary.Show the full question
